In the early 90s, several artists found a home on the fourth floor of the FL and JC Codman Factory in Rockland, Massachusetts. As time progressed, more and more artists were drawn to the building. The Fourth Floor Artists became a loosely knit association of many and diverse artists. In the mid-90s the group became incorporated as 4th Floor Artists, Inc. and has since grown to over 100 artists.

In the fall of 2006 the Codman building was sold and the artists needed to relocate. Many found spaces in the ET Wright building in Rockland, Massachusetts and others found space at the Sandpaper Factory building also in Rockland, Massachusetts. Both buildings were previously factories which were then converted into artist studios and commercial spaces.

Open Studios are held in April/Spring and November/Fall each year.
